Perfect spring program: visit Szeged’s charming botanical garden – PHOTOS

We are approaching the end of March, and the weather is getting better as we speak. This means it is time to organise some trips in nature. A perfect choice is the unparalleled botanical garden in Szeged. Read on and take a look.

The Szeged botanical garden celebrates its 100th birthday this year – that is, the anniversary of its foundation. Regarded as one of the largest botanical gardens in the country, the University of Szeged’s botanical garden is famous for its beautiful lotuses and its ever-expanding plant collection, which now includes more than 6,000 plant species.

The garden, which is part of the University of Szeged, is also responsible for collection management, the protection and conservation of endangered plant species, as well as education and awareness-raising.

The botanical garden is home to more than 5,000 plant species and varieties, on an area of 17 hectares. According to szallas.hu, the garden displays more than 40 protected species, some of which are found only in Hungary. The Indian lotus is unique in Central Europe, covering an area of 1,200 square metres on a pond when in bloom. It is truly an unforgettable sight!

According to programturizmus.hu, in the tropical greenhouse, which was renovated in 2014, exotic plants from distant lands are on display in an area of more than 500 square metres.

The collection introduces the visitor to the most important tropical crops (bananas, cocoa, coffee, ginger, pineapple), shows how plants adapt to tropical conditions (e.g. tree-dwelling, taproots, stem flowering), and presents many plants known as houseplants in a tree-size form (ficus, screw palm, cycads).

The botanical garden, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, was established in 1922 when the University of Cluj moved to Szeged.

To mark the occasion, the city donated 20 acres of arable land to the university for the establishment of a herb garden. This was the beginning of the work that we can still admire today.

Spring flowers are already in bloom in the botanical garden now, but in the Japanese Garden, we can admire bamboos and rhododendrons. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the botanical garden, the university is planning a series of events that will last well into the autumn in the coming months, including themed lavender, rose, and lotus days.

To mark the 100th anniversary, we will also have the opportunity to adopt a plant from the garden.
